Aguadilla Ice Skating Rink and the Community
Mixing school with the many hours of training required for figure skating is difficult, but it's not impossible. Skaters have managed to balance skating and studies for years in the United States and many other countries; and the two are compatible. However, The Puerto Rican Figure Skating Federation will work with municipalities and schools to create programs that support your child's involvement with Figure Skating.

The Puerto Rican Figure Skating Federation plans to work this year with the local schools in Aguadilla, P.R. to gain their support in allowing the local children to get P.E. credit for those children who are training and are part of the learn-to skate program. We will work to establish a school/skating program.

We hope to be a value added resource to the community of Aguadilla in providing other alternatives in the world of sports. A complete education is a valuable asset in life. In order to coordinate school and skating, here are some helpful hints: look at your child's time demands for school studies and skating practices; prepare a financial budget to allocate affordable resources; and establish realistic goals that can be met over a year time frame. Many parents can begin the process of our introduction into the school system. The PFFSF will Plan on meeting with the Mayor of Aguadilla to enlist his support for the implementation of a learn to skate/school program in the early spring for following fall, especially when kids are changing from elementary school, to middle school, and again to high school. The PRFSF hopes to work with the local schools on the availability of classes and the availability of programs for the young community. School officials need you to educate them about skating and the needs of your child/athlete.

There are many colleges that honor and recognized the testing accomplishment for kids that pass USFSA testing levels. Since we have adopted the USFSA testing program we the PRFSF hope to work with the local colleges in the U.S. and Puerto Rico to have our kids gain credit for their accomplishments in the PRFSF program.

Our objective is to provide the local schools with the information to understand the importance of marrying academics with athletics and the benefits derived from it. Time off, schedule reorganization, and physical education credit through independent study are possible and doable and it is our hopes to achieve this. Asking for these options after school will create other opportunities for the children of the community and in a sport they otherwise would never have access to. The U.S. offers this program to those kids that are figure skating and it is our plan to adopt this same program in Puerto Rico. Our objective is to start with Aguadilla then the other municipalities. Some changes take six months to a year to pass through proper channels. Even if your school does not allow credit for skating now, there are packets available through School Programs in the U.S. that we will explore and evaluate for it's ability to be adopted in P.R. that will allow independent study for physical education. If you present this easy outline to your physical education department, it may help.

The United States Figure Skating Association provides outstanding programs for their athletes we hope to model ourselves after this most prestige's organization in order to assist the children of Puerto Rico with the opportunity to become part of this wonderful sport of Figure Skating.
